7,724 words. That’s how long the story is that I finished last night. Holy crap. Until then, the longest I’d written was around 5500 words and I thought that was pretty substantial. But this is nuts. And a couple days ago I had the story up to around 7000 even but cut 1500 words because the ending took a very stupid turn. I’m happy with the ending I came up with for this story, but I’m not sure I executed it properly, or to its fullest potential. We’ll see later when I go back to revise it.
A couple of years ago when I started really concentrating on writing short stories and improving my skills, I was lucky to get 3,000 words out of an idea. But the more I’ve done it, the ore I’ve been able to develop the stories and I think my problem writing good endings is starting to fade, though it’s still the hardest part of the entire process for me.
So now the story is off to a couple readers and I’ve got one more story I want to write before I get back to revisions on Novel Two. I’ve got an idea I think should work for the Hardluck Stories Femme Fatale issue.
