It’s been a while since I’ve written about church and my faith, and I don’t think it’s a coincidence that it corresponds with me not having been to church in quite some time. I miss it when I don’t go, and I try to keep spiritual things on my mind during the week, but the longer I’m away from church, the easier it is to let it all slip away from my thoughts. But that needs to change. Obviously, as we get toward the Christmas holiday, these thoughts are more on my mind. I’ve also taken the step to get involved with my church which is also something I haven’t done in quite some time.
I grew up in a church where both of my parents were very active and everybody knew everybody’s business. Most of my friends came from church and it was the center of everything. But after I moved out on my own I experimented different levels of involvement and then sat out of involvement all together, happy to just enjoy the Sunday worship experience. Every time I go to church though, and this is something that has happened for several years, I feel a little twinge of guilt that I’m not using my writing talent to its full potential. Early on I decided I have no interest in writing commercial religious fiction. I always told myself that I could write whatever I wanted and whatever suited my talents, and then give from that income for tithe and missions and such. Which is still true, but as I have not made any real money from my writing, it’s a bit of a misleading ideal. So I started thinking about other ways to use my writing.
I’ve always loved drama and theater, but the church I grew up in wasn’t really much for drama, and the other churches I went to got their creative stuff from other, bigger churches. I never really took the initiative to ask if they wanted anything created in house. But the other day, I was on our church’s website looking for activities for Becky that she could be involved in with other moms that might get her out of the house with some child care provided. And lo and behold, there was a link for a new team the church is developing that aims to create all of the drama, and websites, and written material in house and they were looking for new writers. So I emailed them and now I’m setting up times to get involved. I don’t know where it will go, but I’m happy to be taking the first step.
What ways other than commercially would you like to use your writing (or singing or painting or banking skills or whatever?)
